IMMUNE SURVEILLANCE

Cancer develops when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably and spread in the human body. There are several mechanisms, or "hallmarks of cancer," that are acquired during the progression of normal cells into malignant cells. One hallmark of cancer is evading destruction by the immune system.

The concept of cancer immune surveillance proposes that an active immune system continuously recognizes and eliminates the vast majority of emerging cancer cells, thus preventing the formation of budding tumors.

However, some cancer cells generate ways to avoid detection by the immune system or limit the extent of immunologic killing, thereby leading to tumor progression.
