Immune Phenotypes

Article 4

IMMUNE PHENOTYPES

In addition to the cancer immunity cycle, cancers can be grouped into 3 phenotypes based on status of the tumor microenvironment:

  • Immune deserts: Lack of immune response, specifically T cells, within the tumor microenvironment
  • Immune-excluded tumors: Immune response is active, but does not penetrate the tumor microenvironment
  • Inflamed tumors: An active immune response is seen within the tumor, but there may still be immune inhibition within the tumor that prevents full destruction of cancer cells

These phenotypes may be measured through biopsy of the tumor.
