The stage of the disease at the time of presentation is the strongest predictor of survival for patients with CRC and forms the basis of appropriate patient management. The tumor histological grade, based on cellular features such as the degree of gland formation, also plays a prognostic role. Well-differentiated tumor cells are considered low-grade tumors, while those that are undifferentiated are considered high-grade tumors. In addition, as we have noted previously, the presence of certain mutations such as BRAF V600E confers a poor prognosis.
