Introduction

The digestive system is responsible for the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules that can be absorbed by the body. Contributing toward that function are the processes of ingestion, propulsion, absorption, and defecation. This system consists of the alimentary canal, which extends from the mouth to the anus, and various accessory organs that release digestive secretions into the canal.
